Future Developments and Assimilation of AI in Radiology

Abstract
Radiology and medical imaging specialties have led the adoption and incorporation of AI. Clinical usage is still in its infancy in the majority of settings, but awareness and acceptance of AI are increasing, and AI is anticipated to take a central place in both research and clinical radiology over the coming decades. This chapter looks to future AI developments, which will revolutionize all aspects of medical imaging and the patient experience within the speciality of radiology, and within the wider radiology department. Addressed topics include the interplay between the radiologist and AI, its impact on patient and administrative tasks, the challenges associated with adopting AI, ethical considerations, new opportunities such as radiomic analysis beyond the capabilities of the human eye, and the use of AI in reducing scan time, image acquisition, and image post-processing.
