Abstract

The Intersection of Technology and Humanity: Exploring the Ethics and Potential of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. 1 " This insightful piece highlights the rapid advancements in medicine and the role of intelligent technology, such as ChatGPT, 2 in addressing challenges including misdiagnosis and inadequate healthcare infrastructure.A previous study of deep-learning models based on long short-term memory (LSTM) for screening Parkinson's disease was an excellent example of how artificial intelligence (AI) can improve the accuracy and efficiency of disease diagnoses. 3The authors demonstrated that LSTM neural networks trained in sequential diagnostic codes from electronic health records provided more-accurate and sensitive diagnoses of Parkinson's disease compared with using traditional machine-learning methods.Furthermore, the recent work by Kim 1 on developing a screening algorithm for diagnosing orthostatic hypotension, a commonly underdiagnosed condition, highlights the potential of AI and machine-learning techniques in addressing rare or complex diseases.Big-data repositories can be used in the development of AI-powered clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) to improve diagnostic accuracy and support medical professionals, including in areas outside their specialties.ChatGPT is a state-of-the-art language-generation model that has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by enhancing the capabilities of CDSSs. 4 ChatGPT can process vast amounts of medical data, including electronic health records, to aid medical professionals in making informed decisions, particularly when faced with complex or rare diseases that fall outside their areas of expertise.ChatGPT can also contribute to the development of moreaccurate screening algorithms, as demonstrated by the above-mentioned previous study.Despite the promising applications of ChatGPT in healthcare, it is essential to address the ethical challenges that they bring. 5Key issues to consider include the following: Data privacy: It is paramount to ensure that the sensitive medical data of patients are protected and handled with the utmost care.Strict data protection protocols and adherence to privacy regulations are vital when utilizing AI-based systems such as ChatGPT in healthcare. Judgment errors: AI-based systems may make errors in diagnosis or treatment recommendations. It is crucial to continuously improve the quality of training data sets and implement human-AI collaboration, such that medical professionals are assisted by AI while maintaining the final decision-making authority. Bias and fairness: AI-based systems may inherit biases present in the training data used, potentially leading to unfair treatment of certain patient populations. It is crucial to develop strategies that identify and mitigate biases in AI models such as ChatGPT to ensure equitable healthcare outcomes.
