Abstract

This study explored foreign language lecturers' views on using artificial intelligence (AI) tools for writing evaluation and feedback to improve the writing skills of foreign language students. It aimed to investigate how lecturers perceive their students’ access to and use of AI-driven writing evaluation and feedback tools. This study explains the attitudes and perceptions of lecturers toward the usefulness of AI tools and the accuracy and objectivity of the tools in offering evaluation beyond grammar and structure in the written content of foreign language learners. Using a purposive sampling technique, 193 university lecturers were carefully selected to participate in the study. Based on the quantitative survey study approach, a questionnaire was developed from the research questions and used to collect the required data. The analysis used the relevant statistical measures. Based on the findings of the data presented, it is evident that ProWritingAid and Grammarly exhibit a high level of effectiveness as writing evaluation and feedback tools, particularly in improving the writing skills of foreign language learners. It is imperative to highlight that these perspectives originated from the views of the university lecturers who participated in the study. According to the data, a significant majority of the participating lecturers, exceeding 80%, agreed that ProWritingAid is highly effective in improving the writing abilities of individuals learning a foreign language. The data further indicate that ChatGPT is the least effective tool. The university lecturers positively evaluated the impact of these tools on enhancing the writing skills of foreign language learners.
