Artificial Intelligence and Medicine: The Big Picture

Abstract
In this chapter, we introduce and motivate the use of AI in the medical domain. We provide an overview of AI, its foundations, historical ups and downs, and terminology and foster an appreciation for what contemporary AI solutions can and cannot do. We present supporting arguments to the claim that AI in healthcare requires a different recipe than the one often used to achieve success in AI in general and that, much like medicine itself, the use of AI in medical domains, including radiology, is a team sport.
