Implications and Considerations of AI for the Healthcare Workforce

Abstract
Numerous implications for the health workforce stem from the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into clinical care. This chapter details duties for health professionals to understand new technologies, expectations from global leadership to upskill, and emerging desires to do so. Initial predictions of health workers being replaced are revisited before exploring how the roles of health professionals are anticipated to change. A two-level framework for upskilling is presented whereby professions impacted by AI upskill to become competent users of AI, with a subset developing deep subject matter expertise to oversee and govern broader implications for patient care.
