Future Prospects of ChatGPT in Higher Education

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been found to solve complex problems in education sector. AI enabled chatbots and virtual assistants have been found to support the higher education institutions (HEls) in their academic and non-academic work. Users of ChatGPT has been phenomenally increasing in developing countries like India. Therefore, an in-depth and insightful research among academicians is required to comprehend the role of ChatGPT in higher education in India. This research paper attempts to explore the role of ChatGPT in future of higher education in India. The research was directed at faculties in higher education institutions (HEls) in Tier I cities in India. The authors conducted purposive sampling and applied Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IP A) among respondents. The research findings reveal that ChatGPT has immense role to play in higher education. However, looking into the pros and cons of ChatGPT, higher education institutions need to train their students on ethical usage of this tool. Moreover, they need to train their teachers to act as facilitators and use ChatGPT as an innovative pedagogical tool in their teaching and assessment.
