Abstract
As the authors of the manuscript “Breaking barriers: can ChatGPT compete with a shoulder and elbow specialist in diagnosis and management?”,1Daher M. Koa J. Boufadel P. Singh J. Fares M.Y. Abboud J. Breaking barriers: can ChatGPT compete with a shoulder and elbow specialist in diagnosis and management?.JSES Int. 2023; 7: 2534-2541https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jseint.2023.07.018Google Scholar we would like to respond to Dr. Daungsupawong’s, letter who recently authored a letter to the editor regarding our article. Regarding our sample size, we acknowledge that it may be small, as we mentioned in our limitations. This study serves as a pilot to gauge the reliability of ChatGPT, and unfortunately the results were not as promising compared to those of a shoulder and elbow specialist. Regarding data input by the research fellow, we took steps to minimize bias by ensuring forms were filled out meticulously one at a time. Additionally, the research fellow had ample experience within the department, which helped reduce bias further. Regarding the comparison between ChatGPT and a specialist, and the need for a larger cohort, we understand there may seem to be conflicting viewpoints. However, prior to this study, it was not clear how ChatGPT would perform compared to specialists. While we agree that a larger sample size is necessary, we anticipate that the fundamental results might not change significantly. Improving ChatGPT's performance is crucial, and we agree that addressing the limitations highlighted in our study is necessary. However, this responsibility lies with the manufacturers. For now, ChatGPT is not equipped to handle patients with shoulder and elbow issues effectively. Funding: No funding was disclosed by the authors. Breaking barriers: can ChatGPT compete with a shoulder and elbow specialist in diagnosis and management?JSES InternationalVol. 7Issue 6PreviewChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) language processing model that uses deep learning to generate human-like responses to natural language inputs. Its potential use in health care has raised questions and several studies have assessed its effectiveness in writing articles, clinical reasoning, and solving complex questions. This study aims to investigate ChatGPT's capabilities and implications in diagnosing and managing patients with new shoulder and elbow complaints in a private clinical setting to provide insights into its potential use as a diagnostic tool for patients and a first consultation resource for primary physicians.
