Abstract
Artificial intelligence and machine learning represent two of the most disruptive technologies, which are going to affect a variety of different industrial fields, including several medical specialities. The chapter aims to investigate the importance of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in supporting clinical decision-making and the ethical concerns that may arise in their development and deployment. Starting from the recent literature, a detailed research protocol is designed to explore the acceptance of such new technologies and the barriers and ethical concerns in their adoption by their users. The context is a challenging one, that of emergency surgery, in collaboration with the World Society of Emergency Surgery.
