Abstract

This paper explores the application of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence system based on a large language model, in creative writing courses in Chinese universities. With the increasing prevalence of creative writing courses, traditional teaching methods encounter numerous challenges, including the discon-nect between theory and practice, insufficient timely feedback on student work, and restricted creative thinking. To address these challenges, we introduced ChatGPT as a supplementary teaching tool in creative writing classrooms. Drawing upon constructivism theory, we underscore the significance of student participation, interaction, collaborative learning, and personalized learning in fostering creative writing skills. Following a one-week writing training session and the implementation of a case study centered on the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu, we assessed ChatGPT's effectiveness in three dimensions: realtime feedback, creative inspiration, and collaborative learning. Survey results revealed high student satisfaction with this teaching approach, acknowl-edging ChatGPT's role in providing prompt feedback, fostering creativity, and facilitating collaborative learning. Our study suggests that ChatGPT technology can expand students' creative horizons and elevate their creative proficiency. In conclusion, the successful integration of ChatGPT as a teaching aid offers novel insights for creative writing instruction and serves as a valuable reference for educators and researchers in the field of education.
