Abstract
This chapter explores the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in health administration and management and outlines the legal and ethical considerations for the use of such AI systems. AI can be used in predictive maintenance, bed management, staff rota planning and clinical decision support (CDS) to optimise hospital processes. However, there are concerns about discrimination and bias, data privacy, consent to the use of data and medical liability. These issues are explored from a United States (US) law perspective, but the lessons can be applied to any jurisdiction. The authors argue that these factors should be considered when implementing relevant AI systems to ensure that healthcare professionals and patients are protected from the unintended consequences of the technology.
