Abstract
This chapter examines recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically focusing on ChatGPT and its potential applications in academic writing tasks. The approach involves a systematic review of data collected from December 2022 to July 2023. Fifteen studies were selected using keywords such as ‘ChatGPT in writing’, ‘AI in education’, ‘Future of writing’, ‘AI as writing assistants’, and inclusion criteria following PRISMA guidelines. These studies are analyzed using the Gioia Methodology. The findings indicate that chatbots like ChatGPT are valuable tools for learners, instructors, and researchers. These chatbots have become essential in technological advancement, particularly after the Fourth Industrial Revolution in 2015. However, their effectiveness depends on users’ specific needs and how they choose to leverage these chatbots. Instructors can use them for professional development, students can employ them as virtual tutors, and researchers can utilize them as customized search engines and idea generators. This study raises some concerns regarding the reliability and integrity of ChatGPT in content generation. Consequently, the academic community should revisit its pedagogical, assessment, and training policy guidelines and methods to better incorporate AI into higher education.
