Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to transform medical education by offering new ways to enhance learning, improve skills, and streamline administrative processes. Here, we explore the potential use of AI to enhance histology teaching to medical and dental students. The use of AI in medical education, and specifically in histology, aims to personalize learning. It can help to adapt the learning content to each student’s individual style and rhythm. AI-based tools can assist in the identification and interpretation of histological structures. This will contribute to a better understanding of the microscopic structure of tissues and organs and will help develop students’ diagnostic skills. Recently published data show that medical students understand the importance of AI and are ready to use it in their careers (Sit, et al. 2020). Despite the promise of AI, its implementation in medical education faces several challenges. One of the main issues is the high cost of developing and maintaining AI-based tools. This is especially critical for low- and middle-income countries, including Ukraine. Educators who will work with artificial intelligence need special training. This can be a long and costly process, so the staff may resist such innovations. This is also true for students used to traditional teaching methods. There is also the challenge of ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the AI systems. Potential errors can lead to both an inappropriate score as well as incorrect knowledge. The introduction of AI into histology education also raises certain ethical considerations. Issues such as maintaining data confidentiality, making algorithms transparent, and reducing human influence should be prioritized. AI holds great promise for improving the teaching of histology to medical and dental students. However, realizing this potential is quite complex and requires a careful and balanced approach to solving certain challenges.
