Abstract
The end of 2022 saw the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) application, an emerging technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) that uses large language models to generate responses and interact with users. This study explores the rapidly evolving role of AI in education and its potential to impact teaching and learning by exploring the perceptions of preservice Moroccan teachers regarding ChatGPT’s use in teaching. We frame our study using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) to explore the key determinants of ChatGPT integration into teaching. We use an adapted version of the UTAUT survey instrument and semi-structured interviews with 140 preservice Moroccan teachers. This study illuminates the perceptions of Moroccan teachers and reveals that they generally hold a positive view of ChatGPT’s utility. Determinants such as perceived usefulness and social influence play pivotal roles in their decision to adopt ChatGPT. Facilitating conditions did not have any effect. Notably, 50% of the preservice teachers intend to recommend ChatGPT as a learning tool to their students.
