Abstract

Introduction: Organ donation is a complex process. Research has showed that involvement of experts in ICU, ED, and other related clinical fields is crucial in facilitating organ donation. In 2023, the China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation launched the Systematic Multi-Disciplinary Collaborative (SMDC) Project based on global experiences, provided structured training courses, established the SMDC network, and performed knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) surveys. This study highlights some major findings of the survey, revealing differences in the knowledge and attitudes of health professionals across different disciplines, and the correlation between knowledge and attitudes. Methods: SMDC is a comprehensive program. It offers structured training contents, including concept of SMDC, donor detection, death diagnosis by neurological criteria, family communication, and donor management; encourages local hospitals to participate in SMDC network which helps strengthen communication between donor hospitals and OPOs. KAP surveys were done utilizing a random sampling approach. Data was collected through web-based quetionnaire tools. The Kruskal-Wallis Test was used to examine differences in donation related knowledge and attitude levels among different departments. Two tailed Pearson correlation test was conducted to see the correlation between the knowledge and health professionals’ attitudes towards SMDC. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 27. Results: In 2023, 9 training courses were organized in 8 provinces, 9 cities around China. 1165 participants attended the trainings, they were from ICU, ED, neurology and neurosurgery departments, administrative departments, and other departments. 8 hospitals joined in the SMDC Network as Demonstration Bases; 40 joined as Collaboration Bases; 121 joined as Partners. Among all participants, 230(19.7%) answered the survey. Data showed that ICU staff have a higher knowledge level in terms of organ donation procedure, initial family communication, donor management and OPO contact information than others. No significant difference has been seen regarding knowledge on brain death concept, and participants from all departments showed positive support toward SMDC (Figure 1). In the meantime, participants’ familiarity with organ donation procedure, family communication, donor management and OPO contact info significantly impacts their attitudes of donor referral (Table 1).Conclusion: According to the recently promulgated Regulations on Human Organ Donation and Transplantation in China, which will take effect from May 1, 2024, health institutions will be obligated to report potential donors to local OPOs. The COTDF-initiated SMDC initiative aims to enhance understanding of organ donation and establish a working mechanism that systematically engages all pertinent departments, thereby assist OPOs in achieving higher performance, and effectively enforce this stipulation
