Abstract
There is no shortage of innovative platform technologies which have expanded their utility into medicine, to name a few: augmented reality, 3D printing, robotics, genome editing, and artificial intelligence (AI). Some have a greater potential to cause disruption than others. In the last decade and in the decade to come, the innovations which have demonstrated the greatest potential to disrupt medicine can be broadly described as automation technologies, robotics, and data science including artificial intelligence. Much has been discussed about the societal and ethical impact of disruptive innovation in medicine, and yet—some of the most powerful forces which will drive the adoption of these technologies arise from financial factors and cost leadership that disruptive innovation strategies bring to the healthcare sector.
