Medical information systems and physician skepticism: barriers to digitalization of anesthesiology and resuscitation services

Abstract

Objective. To assess the subjective perception of anesthesiologists and resuscitators of the process of implementing electronic document management in their daily routine practice. Materials and methods. The respondents in this study were the heads of the anesthesiology and resuscitation (A&R) service of the hospital and anesthesiologists and resuscitators. An analysis of 339 questionnaires independently completed by survey participants in the online version of the questionnaire was conducted. The sampling principle: deliberate. Survey period: April 12 - August 4, 2023. Results. The study has shown that the digitalization of the A&R service faces a number of obstacles that can slow down the process of integration and effective use of the medical information system (MIS) and other digital technologies. Dissatisfaction with both the technical equipment and the ability to connect automated workplaces to the MIS was noted by 20 % of respondents. Dissatisfaction with the functionality and operability of the MIS was noted by 30 % of survey participants. One third of respondents expressed the idea of creating a single MIS for the AiR service of Russia with the development and integration of unified templates of records, protocols, manipulations, assessment scales and calculators in accordance with the requirements of the governing regulatory documents. Conclusions. Understanding the problems and barriers to the implementation of information technologies in the routine practice of the AiR service and developing strategies for solving them are the main steps towards successful and functionally complete digitalization. It is necessary to consider the possibility and feasibility of creating a working group within the professional community of A & R of Russia to participate in the process of selecting and configuring the MIS, which will take into account specialized needs and proposals in order to create an ideal, convenient electronic document management system.
