Abstract
In recent times, Artificial intelligence (AI) systems have gained importance through its increased use among people. It is evident that AI impacts people, especially students in both positive and negative way. However, impact of AI particularly on the cognitive abilities of students remains a critical area of exploration. This narrative review explores the positive and negative cognitive impact of using AI among students. This review synthesises the existing studies that examined the impact of AI on students’ thinking, decision making, problem solving, creativity, and learning to exclusively focus on impact of technological advancements on mental abilities of students. This review also discusses about the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI and addresses the importance of responsible use and the need to safeguard oneself from excessive use to avoid negative cognitive consequences. Overall, this review aims to provide insights about the possible cognitive benefits and challenges associated with the use of AI among students identify research gaps and suggest avenues for future investigation.
