Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as an active area of research and development in almost all disciplines including health systems. AI is transforming the health systems to provide ease in the practice of medicine and to improve the quality of patient outcomes. A core component of an AI-enabled health system is the artificial intelligent agent (AIA) – software robot or softbot – the algorithm embedded in the medical devices. This chapter reviews the potential role of AIA in transforming a traditional medical device into an AI-enabled medical device, thereby contributing towards building an AI-enabled health system. This chapter examines the structure of problem-solving and critical-thinking intelligent agents proposed to be embedded in medical devices to assess the surgical intervention processes.
