Abstract
I lead a team of medical-surgical unit practicing nurses who always ask what artificial intelligence (AI) will do for them. How should I respond? The integration of AI into nursing practice offers a wealth of potential benefits for medical-surgical nurses. Last month's Leadership Q&A (January 2025, p. 56) outlines ways that AI aids clinical decision-making, streamlines workflows, and improves patient outcomes. Now, let's look at other ways AI can help nurses provide high-quality patient care. ADVANCING PATIENT INTERACTIONS AI can personalize education and support to enhance the critical task of educating and engaging patients. Educational tools. AI can generate personalized educational materials for patients. Interactive platforms. AI-powered chatbots can answer patient questions, provide medication reminders, and offer support between visits. Tailored interventions. AI can analyze patient data to identify those at risk for nonadherence and suggest tailored interventions to improve adherence to treatment plans. Predictive interventions. AI can review aggregated patient information and predict changes in conditions and intensity needs, suggesting early care responses. SEAMLESS CARE COORDINATION AI can streamline communication and collaboration among healthcare teams. Care transition management. AI can ensure smooth transitions of care by providing detailed patient handoff reports and coordinating follow-up appointments. Interdisciplinary collaboration. AI can facilitate communication among healthcare professionals, ensuring that everyone involved in a patient's care is aligned. Resource allocation. AI can analyze staffing needs and patient-care intensity levels to optimize nurse-patient assignments and ensure adequate coverage. WORKLOAD AND JOB SATISFACTION Burnout is a significant issue in nursing, and AI can help alleviate some of the pressures contributing to it. Administrative support. AI can take over repetitive administrative tasks, allowing nurses to focus on patient care and clinical duties. Workload management. AI can help manage workloads by prioritizing tasks, scheduling breaks, and ensuring nurses have time for self-care. Professional development. AI can suggest relevant courses, certifications, and articles based on individual interests and career goals. AI IN ACTION Here are a few current real-world applications of AI in nursing. IBM Watson for Oncology. This AI system assists in cancer treatment by analyzing patient data and providing evidence-based treatment recommendations. Sepsis Watch. An AI-powered early-warning system that helps healthcare providers identify and treat sepsis in its early stages, improving patient outcomes. Predictive analytics for patient deterioration. AI systems that predict patient deterioration and provide early alerts, allowing for timely interventions and preventing adverse events. By understanding and embracing AI, your team can leverage these technologies to provide better care, improve patient outcomes, and enhance their professional satisfaction. Your role as a leader is crucial in guiding your team through this transition. By staying informed about the latest AI advancements and fostering an open and supportive environment, you can help your team see AI not as a threat but as a valuable tool that can enhance their practice and improve the quality of care they provide.
