Abstract

Nurses are central to healthcare delivery in health institutions, and the integration of AI in healthcare can significantly impact the quality of care they provide to patients. In Saudi Arabia, AI enhances healthcare efficacy and fosters creativity, with studies shedding light on cultivating an AI-driven culture. However, existing research on healthcare professionals' perceptions of AI in Saudi Arabia has often overlooked nurses, prompting this study to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding AI. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses, nursing faculty, and students regarding artificial intelligence in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional descriptive correlational study was conducted from June 2023 to November 2023 to assess participants' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding AI. A total of 349 online questionnaires were distributed using a convenience sampling technique. The data collection instrument underwent pilot testing for validity and reliability and encompassed participants' sociodemographic data, as well as their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding AI. Descriptive and correlational statistics were employed for data analysis. Participants exhibited varying yet satisfactory levels of knowledge concerning AI and its healthcare applications. Regarding attitudes, the majority displayed mildly positive sentiments towards AI in nursing. Participants also demonstrated a moderately positive level of practice and proficiency in AI. Moreover, significant and positive relationships were observed between participants' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding AI. This study furnishes valuable insights into the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of AI among staff nurses, nursing faculty, and students in Saudi Arabia. The participants displayed a satisfactory level of knowledge, generally mild positive attitudes, and moderately positive practices in AI, indicating room for improvement. Targeted interventions, continuous education initiatives, and on-the-job training programs are warranted to bolster participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning AI within the nursing profession. • Nurses play a vital role in healthcare, and AI integration can enhance patient care quality. • Participants showed varying knowledge of AI in healthcare, with generally mild positive attitudes and moderate practices. • Positive correlations between knowledge, attitudes, and practices suggest a need for nurses’ education & training in AI.
