Analysis of Influential Factors on the Writing Quality of ChatGPT-generated Academic Essays

Abstract

This study investigates the influential factors impacting the writing quality of academic essays produced by ChatGPT, an advanced language model developed by OpenAI. Employing a comprehensive evaluation framework, this paper establishes an assessment scale to gauge the writing quality of AI-chatbot content across various dimensions, encompassing accuracy of citations, development of ideas and content, spelling and grammar, and plagiarism. Through statistical analysis, the key factors influencing writing quality were identified. Cohesion and idea originality emerged as significant predictors of high-quality academic writing, while the significance of spelling and grammar, although essential, exhibited comparatively less influence. This study highlights the limitations of AI technology while outlining prospects for enhancing AI-generated content in the future. This investigation contributes to a nuanced comprehension of the capabilities and constraints of AI-driven academic writing, offering valuable insights into enhancing the quality and applicability of AI writing tools.
