Abstract
This study investigated how feedback generated by peers and ChatGPT might influence the quality of students’ writing. The participants were 59 students in two cohorts learning business English writing in a university in Chinese mainland. The results showed that ChatGPT feedback could lead to improvement on several Coh-Metrix measures of writing quality and generally outperformed peers in providing feedback for writing improvement. However, peers outdid ChatGPT on measure of Deep cohesion in writing. Further investigation of the feedback revealed that both ChatGPT and humans have their merits and demerits in providing feedback for writing. Implications of the study are discussed.
