Abstract
In today's healthcare landscape, cutting-edge technologies like AI offer exciting possibilities but also significant challenges. This chapter explores the complex relationship between these advancements and patient safety, highlighting the fine line between innovation and risk. AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by improving diagnosis, predicting outcomes, and personalizing treatments, but over-reliance without proper oversight can lead to errors and biases. The chapter also addresses the growing problem of unreliable online health information, emphasizing the need for accurate, evidence-based resources. Building on foundational reports like “To Err is Human,” the chapter discusses common pitfalls in healthcare technology, such as poor design, weak system integration, and inadequate planning, which can lead to new errors like alert fatigue. It also examines specific safety concerns, including medical identity theft, data breaches, and medication errors.
