Abstract
If (generative) Artificial Intelligence ((gen)AI) has a major impact on the future of journalism, then the same holds true for science journalism, which is perceived to be in crisis. Drawing upon the Technology Acceptance Model and emphasizing the evolving role of (gen)AI in the entire news production process, this paper considers perceived benefits (e.g., efficiency) and risks (e.g., accuracy) associated with (gen)AI integration into science journalistic practices. The study employs semi-structured interviews with 30 German science journalists, exploring their perceptions and use of (gen)AI in the selection, production, and distribution of news. It finds that AI is largely perceived as a colleague that can enhance efficiency, and genAI is not permitted to operate without human oversight. Based on interviews with German journalists in this study, (gen)AI will most likely not worsen the crisis of science journalism but may even improve working conditions.
