Abstract
Sign languages are crucial for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, serving as their primary mode of communication and a key to accessing education, employment, and social integration. This chapter examines the advancements in computing technologies that have significantly enhanced sign language recognition and education, thereby promoting inclusivity and accessibility. The chapter delves into the current landscape of sign language technologies, covering video and sensor-based recognition systems, and advancements in spoken-to-sign language translation, including rule-based, statistical, neural, and transformer-based models. Additionally, the chapter reviews digital tools for sign language awareness and learning, highlighting websites, Android apps, and their limitations. A detailed discussion is provided on SmartSignLearn, a novel system designed for schools for the hearing-impaired, featuring sign language generation through animation, system architecture, results, evaluation, and future enhancements.
