Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific writing is rapidly evolving. With tools that range from language models capable of drafting articles to platforms that assist in referencing and formatting, AI-based manuscript writing offers substantial advantages. These advantages make AI an attractive tool for authors to use in their manuscript writing. Efficiency And Time-Saving: AI-powered writing tools help significantly reduce the time spent drafting manuscripts. These tools can rapidly generate text based on provided inputs, structure complex ideas, and ensure adherence to formatting guidelines. This allows researchers to concentrate on data interpretation and scientific innovation rather than manual tasks like formatting and grammar correction. For instance, platforms such as Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer [ChatGPT] and Grammarly can help draft portions of the manuscript, providing suggestions for flow, cohesion, and readability, thus increasing productivity.[1,2] Language and Grammar Correction: AI tools benefit non-native English-speaking authors who often struggle with language barriers. These tools significantly enhance the clarity, grammatical accuracy, and overall presentation of scientific work, making it more accessible to global audiences. A recent study highlighted the capability of AI systems to enhance writing quality for non-native-English speaking authors, assisting them in publishing in high-impact journals.[3] Tools such as Grammarly and Paperpal can enhance style and tone, making writing more coherent and engaging. AI-powered assistance helps generate ideas and create outlines, supporting non-native English-speaking authors in organizing their thoughts. AI also optimizes content for search engines and provides immediate feedback and support, encouraging continuous writing improvement. Overall, the integration of AI in manuscript writing significantly empowers non-native English speakers, making their scientific communication more efficient.[4-6] Consistency and Standardization: AI tools can help adhere to journal guidelines by automatically formatting references, ensuring consistent terminology, and checking for plagiarism. This streamlines the manuscript submission process and reduces the likelihood of technical rejections. Integrated with AI, tools like EndNote or Zotero can suggest and format references according to the specific requirements of journals, saving significant effort.[7,8] Data Analysis and Visual Representation: AI tools can assist with data analysis and creating figures and tables, especially for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. These capabilities automate repetitive tasks and present data in easily understandable formats, adding value to research. For example, SciNote, an AI-assisted software, helps organize data for more precise presentation in research papers, reducing the chance of reporting errors.[9] Self-Learning Benefits: AI has shown remarkable potential in enhancing self-learning processes for individuals.[10] By leveraging machine learning algorithms and vast data repositories, AI facilitates personalized learning experiences tailored to the needs and abilities of each user. AI systems can analyze individual learning patterns and preferences. Based on this analysis, AI can plan personalized learning pathways, ensuring learners receive content most relevant to their progress and interests.[10] The system dynamically adapts to the learner’s pace, providing additional resources to maintain engagement and promote mastery. AI-powered educational tools offer immediate feedback on exercises and help learners understand and correct their mistakes in real-time, facilitating quicker and more effective learning. Detailed analytics provide insights into their performance, identifying areas of strength and those needing improvement. AI identifies potential learning difficulties early on and offers timely intervention and support. AI-driven chatbots and virtual tutors provide learners with 24/7 assistance, answering queries, and offering guidance whenever needed. AI can predict future learning outcomes based on current performance data.[11] This can help learners adjust their strategies and approaches to achieve better results. It is important to note that human-written manuscripts exhibit more originality than AI-generated manuscripts. Authors should leverage the information and guidance AI tools offer to their benefit. Here’s an example of how AI can create a “bland” text on the role of “cardiac anesthesia and cardiac anesthesiologists” compared to a more relevant, human-written version. AI-Generated Paragraph: Cardiac anesthesia is an essential part of heart surgery. Anesthesiologists monitor the patient’s vital signs and ensure the patient’s comfort during the surgery. They use various anesthetic medications tailored to the patient’s medical condition. After the surgery, they manage the patient’s pain to keep them comfortable. Anesthesiologists also provide consultation on pain management, anticoagulation, and airway management.[12] Human-Written Paragraph: The role of a cardiac anesthesiologist extends far beyond merely administering anesthesia to patients. These highly trained professionals are essential in managing a patient’s overall care during heart surgery. They continuously monitor vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation, making real-time adjustments to ensure the patient’s safety and stability. Employing a personalized approach, anesthesiologists choose the most appropriate anesthetics based on the patient’s unique medical history and current condition. Postoperatively, they play a vital role in pain management, utilizing their expertise to ensure the patient’s comfort during recovery. Moreover, they offer invaluable consultation on complex issues like anticoagulation and airway management, rendering them integral to the surgical team and essential for the patient’s successful outcome. In this comparison, the human-written paragraph illustrates a more detailed picture of a cardiac anesthesiologist’s role, while the AI-generated one lacks depth. CONCLUSION AI has profoundly transformed the field of scientific writing, offering numerous benefits that make it an essential tool for authors. AI-powered writing tools improve efficiency and save time, enabling researchers to concentrate on data interpretation and scientific innovation rather than manual tasks like formatting and grammar correction. These tools are especially advantageous for non-native English speakers, enhancing clarity, grammatical accuracy, and overall presentation, which facilitates publication in high-impact journals. Additionally, AI promotes consistency and standardization, helping authors adhere to journal guidelines and reducing the likelihood of technical rejections.
