Abstract
On June 30, Microsoft announced a generative AI (genAI) system that outperforms physicians in diagnosing complex cases, solving eight of 10 NEJM case studies, compared to two of 10 for physicians. Microsoft acknowledged that its system is not ready for clinical use; however, other genAI tools have already been deployed in health systems. DeepSeek, developed in 2023 as an open-source, low-cost genAI model, has been deployed in hundreds of Chinese hospitals for diagnostics, decision support, and hospital management.
