Abstract
AbstractThe purpose of this study is to explore the level of awareness and usage, reveal the motivation and primary purpose of using ChatGPT by scholars, and elucidate the importance of ChatGPT while also shedding light on potential challenges and limitations. Most crucially, this study seeks to address the challenging question of whether ChatGPT should be integrated into research, as perceived by research scholars at Aligarh Muslim University. To serve this purpose, an intriguing survey questionnaire was conducted among research scholars at Aligarh Muslim University. Different factors were examined and analysed by using a combination of both closed-ended and open-ended questions along with 18 Likert scale questions. The findings revealed the awareness and utilisation of ChatGPT among scholars, the perception, purpose, and motivation of using ChatGPT, and their favourable preference for using ChatGPT over humans. Additionally, the findings address the crucial question of whether research scholars are inclined toward adopting ChatGPT in educational contexts. Although this study investigated only the perceptions of research scholars, a convenience sampling approach was adopted, which offers useful insights into the AMU research scholar community; however, the findings should be interpreted within the limitations of non-probability sampling. The survey is conducted within the context of AMU,and provides insights relevant to university-level education and research. With this comprehensive understanding, any forward-thinking university or library aimed at assimilating ChatGPT into their research landscape has gained a strategic advantage. Numerous surveys have explored the merits and demerits of ChatGPT, offering insights and recommendations for more effective integration. However, a fundamental question remains unanswered: the appropriateness of its implementation in educational settings, especially research. This study endeavours to address this pivotal inquiry. Importantly, there is a dearth of surveys conducted at Aligarh Muslim University, and few are carried out at the university level, especially in the Indian context.
