Abstract
The continent of Africa has a high rate of illness and limited resources for healthcare, which presents significant challenges for the region’s healthcare systems. AI technology in African healthcare has significant promise for tackling these issues and enhancing health results. Therefore, with the urgent need for artificial intelligence-powered solutions, the chapter aims to engage in a critical conversation and exposition of the current state of healthcare in Africa. Moreover, this work will serve to explain the challenges faced to date in adopting artificial intelligence into African healthcare in terms of diagnosing illnesses, treatment planning, and image analysis. The presentation of comprehensive examples and case studies that try to shed valuable light on the challenges that must be overcome and possible remedies that might be explored. This would, therefore, mean a complete revolution in health systems, bridging the gap in the availability of high-quality healthcare across the continent through the use of artificial intelligence technology. This chapter’s main goal is to show off the potential advantages artificial intelligence could have for the African healthcare sector. But, even more critically, it should underline how necessary it is to take proactive measures and work together to adopt and scale up AI breakthroughs throughout the continent.
