Abstract
Abstract As a scientific discipline, medicine has always sought to incorporate new technological and scientific advances from other fields. Computer science is no exception. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) are about to revolutionize clinical medicine. Although ethical and epistemic issues raised by AI are gaining increasing traction by philosophers, the relevant debate is still in its infancy. This chapter sets out to navigate the philosophical debate on medical AI by focusing on three problems that currently claim center-stage: opacity, collaboration of AI systems with physicians and patients, and fairness. The chapter also considers what the contribution of philosophy can be—and where the particular challenges for philosophy lie—given the fast-paced research landscape in medical AI.
