Abstract
Abstract This chapter reviews the challenges of information overload for healthcare professionals considering a rapidly growing body of the published scientific literature and opportunities to address these challenges. Historical context to the evolution of information retrieval is also provided regarding question answering systems and addressing the lexicon associated with available artificial intelligence (AI) technologies applicable to oncology. The chapter focuses on the applications of AI-based literature mining and data extraction in cancer research, and decision-making support using multiple data sources and database platforms. It also provides perspective to enablers and barriers of the wider AI implementation in healthcare and discusses the future outlook for AI-driven tools.
