Abstract
Clinical health professionals, health service users, and people who fulfil many other roles in the health system all must develop new knowledge, skills, and attitudes to engage safely and responsibly with artificial intelligence (AI). Because AI in healthcare is both shaping and being shaped by a diverse workforce and influencing the health sector on many levels, it is important to undertake relevant workforce capability development as an interprofessional, whole-of-health-system project. This chapter recommends three components of such a project: a nationally coherent framework for learning and development to equip clinical health professionals to use AI safely and responsibly; a nationally accessible programme of learning and development to empower patients and consumers to use AI safely and responsibly; and a national cross-sector learning and development community to enable planners, managers, researchers, and developers to use AI safely and responsibly in health. Concerted efforts are needed in all three areas to prepare the workforce to engage appropriately with AI to achieve shared social goals for health care.
