Abstract
This chapter explores the ethical, legal and social issues of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in geriatrics. With the increasing number of geriatrics in the world, the application of AI, in the form of assistive robotics, predictive health solutions, and digital companions, is growing to assist older adults medically, socially, and emotionally. Although such technologies have potential benefits to increase the efficiency of healthcare, individualize it, and assist caregivers, they give rise to important ethical concerns concerning issues of privacy, autonomy, fairness, and dignity of a human person. This chapter inserts these problems into conventional codes of medical ethics, but at the same time it directs these problems to the risks that are unique to the elderly populations. Specific adversity posed by AI, such as data protection, algorithmic bias, dependency, and accountability, in the course of making crucial decisions using AI, are addressed in detail.
