Abstract

Abstract The perception of artificial intelligence (AI) plays a pivotal role in determining its acceptance and integration into various domains of society. This study explores the attitudes, understanding, and concerns surrounding AI among the urban population of Kolkata, West Bengal, a region with a growing digital infrastructure yet rooted in diverse sociocultural traditions. The aim of the study is to assess how demographic variables such as age, gender, education, and occupational background influence individuals’ views on AI’s role in their daily lives and its broader societal implications. A sample of 200 participants, aged 18–60 years, were selected from different socioeconomic clusters across Kolkata. Participants were stratified based on residential zones (north, south, east, and central Kolkata) to ensure a comprehensive representation of the city’s demographic diversity. Data were collected through structured interviews using a validated interview schedule comprising questions on AI awareness, perceived benefits, risks, and ethical concerns. Study findings reveal a multifaced perception of AI among respondents. In conclusion, findings underscore the importance of AI and perception of application in daily life.
