Abstract
Despite AI proliferation in everyday business, mixed perceptions remain on embracing the technology and its associated effects. In education, some are looking for solutions to cut AI tools from students, whereas some are embracing AI tools. For some students, AI tools allow them to solve problems much faster and become more productive, whereas some degrade their cognitive capacity as they become dangerously reliant on AI tools. Within the academic milieu, there is no consensus on the right AI tools, as there are multiple cases where students plagiarised AI-generated solutions out of context. Even though there are many challenges in using AI in education, this study aims to analyse the efficacy of AI tools in teaching and learning and students' affinity to AI technology. Early results from a case study at the Namibia University of Science and Technology showed that students encouraged to use AI when studying, perform 2.5 times better than those exposed to conventional instruction models. Students who were guided to use AI technology had their performance improve 5.7 times relative to the control group not using AI technology.
