Exploring the Impact of Generative AI on Education: A Twitter Sentiment Study with Transformer Models

Abstract
Generative AI (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT are transforming educational practices worldwide. While these technologies present opportunities for personalization, efficiency, and innovation, they also raise challenges related to academic integrity, data security, and the evolving role of educators. This study investigates public perceptions of GenAI in education through sentiment analysis of Twitter discourse. A dataset of 1,487 education-related tweets was extracted, pre-processed, and analysed using a RoBERTa-based sentiment classification model. Results indicate that 89.8% of tweets expressed positive sentiment, 7.7% neutral, and 2.5% negative. Temporal analysis revealed spikes in tweet activity corresponding to key GenAI developments, with positive sentiment consistently dominating. These findings provide actionable insights for educators, policymakers, and AI developers in shaping responsible integration strategies for GenAI in education.
