Abstract

The sudden emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technology has disrupted thelandscape of higher education globally. While offering efficiency and personalized learning experiences, the adoption of this technology raises serious concerns regarding academic integrity and cognitive dependency. This study aims to analyze the influence of ethical awareness on AI usage behavior among university students. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data were collected from 26 valid respondents through an online survey. The results of the statistical analysis reveal an interesting phenomenon: despite a very high intensity of AI usage (the majority using it more than five times per week), students continue to maintain strict ethical standards. This is evidenced by high mean scores on indicators of academic honesty (4.35) and efforts to avoid plagiarism (4.23). These findings indicate that students tend to position AI as a “discussion partner” (copilot) rather than a substitute for critical thinking processes. This study recommends that educational institutions shift from a prohibition-based approach toward one centered on critical ethical literacy.
