The Role and Significance of Artificial Intelligence in Transforming Modern Society: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Directions

Abstract

Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) has shifted from a specialized computational tool to a general-purpose technology shaping modern society through automation, prediction, personalization, and large-scale decision support. Drawing on ScienceDirect-indexed scholarship, this narrative review synthesizes evidence on AI’s societal transformation across economic systems, labor markets, healthcare, education, finance, media, and urban governance. Opportunities include productivity gains, improved service quality, enhanced risk prediction, and new scientific and creative capabilities. At the same time, AI introduces significant challenges—algorithmic bias, transparency and accountability gaps, privacy and security risks, misinformation and deepfakes, distributional inequities, and systemic risk amplification in complex systems such as finance. The review highlights the growing emphasis on “responsible AI” governance and operational guidance for deploying AI systems safely and fairly. We conclude with future directions centered on trustworthy and explainable AI, robust evaluation and auditing, inclusive adoption, interdisciplinary regulation, and institutional capacity building to ensure AI contributes to human well-being and sustainable development.
