Abstract

The emergence of ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) has sparked intense debate across higher education, with many questioning their impact on academic integrity, cognitive engagement, and the role of educators. While some institutions have responded with outright bans due to concerns around plagiarism and student dependency, a growing body of research suggests that responsible and guided use of these tools can significantly enhance teaching, learning, and research practices. This article takes a balanced and evidence-based approach to explore the transformative potential of ChatGPT in education by categorizing its application across three domains: general education, higher education pedagogy, and academic research. We synthesize findings from 35 peer-reviewed studies, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges of integrating ChatGPT into academic workflows. We also draw upon recent studies that caution against over-reliance on AI tools and emphasize frameworks where human expertise and AI capabilities work in complement to one another. Our analysis identifies practical use cases such as feedback generation, content summarization, and inclusive support for under-resourced learners, alongside risks including hallucinations, ethical gray zones, and diminishing critical thinking. The paper concludes by proposing ethical guidelines and policy recommendations, including transparent AI disclosure, digital literacy training, and departmental oversight, to foster responsible use. With appropriate guardrails, ChatGPT can evolve from a perceived threat into a collaborative partner in shaping the future of education and research. Additionally, the findings underscore the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration to establish best practices for AI integration. Future research should further investigate the long-term cognitive and social effects of sustained ChatGPT use in academic settings. Ultimately, by balancing innovation with responsibility, higher education can unlock the full potential of AI while safeguarding academic values and integrity.
