Abstract
In contemporary higher education, English instruction struggles to balance large-scale teaching with individualized learning demands. Generative AI, featuring dynamic text generation, adaptive feedback, and contextualized content delivery, offers transformative potential for addressing these challenges. This study explores the use, effectiveness, and challenges of generative AI in college English education based on survey and qualitative data from 129 students. Findings reveal that students demonstrate basic AI literacy and primarily apply generative tools for writing and speaking enhancement, with usage frequency positively correlated with perceived learning outcomes. While attitudes toward AI-assisted instruction are largely positive, concerns regarding academic integrity, information reliability, privacy, and technological dependence persist. The study provides empirical evidence to guide pedagogical integration and policy development for AI-enhanced English education in higher education.
