Healthcare in the Age of LLMs

Abstract

With the rapid development of large language models (LLMs) in real-world scenarios, their potential impact on healthcare has attracted attention from academic researchers, healthcare professionals, and industries. As radiology plays a crucial role in providing quality healthcare and achieving the best possible patient outcomes, recent research has explored the applications of LLMs in this field. This chapter provides details of the recent research on LLMs and their potentials in radiology, including auto-reporting by generating summaries, or Impressions based on the Findings in a medical image, standardizing radiology reports, and multimodal LLMs as a radiologist assistant in answering questions about radiology images. Additionally, this chapter investigates enhancing cybersecurity in medical devices, including those used in radiology, utilizing LLMs. It also presents the benefits, limitations, and challenges of LLMs in the above-mentioned applications. Finally, this chapter gives a glimpse into future promises of LLMs in radiology and their impact in healthcare.
