Abstract
ChatGPT’s potential benefits in education are promising, but concerns about academic integrity and its application in language learning remain. This has prompted researchers to explore its use further. Moreover, there are limited studies on ChatGPT usage in English language learning in Vietnam. Hence, the present study aims to investigate EFL students’ perceptions of the relationship between English skills and the use of ChatGPT. To address the above aim, the quantitative research approach was applied. 146 survey responses were collected from EFL students who were studying at a private university in Can Tho, Vietnam, and had experience using ChatGPT in their English courses for at least two months. The questionnaire included 11 items adapted from previous studies. Findings showed that there was a positive correlation between English skills and ChatGPT use. Notably, the results showed that using ChatGPT significantly improved students’ English skills. This study provides educators with a multidimensional perspective on integrating AI-enabled bots, such as ChatGPT, into educational settings. Further studies need to be conducted using larger and more diverse samples to gain a deeper understanding of the use of ChatGPT for academic purposes and to provide tailored solutions to minimize threats and optimize the benefits of ChatGPT.
