Abstract

This study explored athletes’ perceptions and behavioral intention to use ChatGPT for planning their workouts, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as its theoretical underpinning. Specifically, it examined the relationships among perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and behavioral intention to adopt ChatGPT as a tool for designing training routines. A total of 338 student-athletes from various sports disciplines participated in the study. A researcher-developed survey instrument, validated by experts and pilot-tested for reliability, was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics revealed that athletes were generally uncertain about ChatGPT’s ease of use and usefulness for workout planning. Spearman’s rho correlation analysis indicated significant and strong positive relationships between perceived usefulness and behavioral intention and between perceived ease of use and behavioral intention. These findings suggest that although athletes are familiar with technology in general, they have not fully explored the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT in the context of fitness planning. The study highlights the importance of increasing awareness and guided use of ChatGPT to support its adoption in athletic training, particularly for those with limited access to professional coaching.
