Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the emerging technologies set to shape the next era of health and social care. Building on earlier chapters that examined the digital tools already in use, this chapter turns towards the horizon, offering a forward-looking view of innovations that are rapidly moving from research into practice. It considers a diverse range of developments—including ambient clinical documentation, artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistants, digital twins, robotics, nanotechnology, and quantum computing—highlighting their potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline procedures, personalise treatments, and strengthen patient self-management. Rather than providing an exhaustive catalogue, the chapter uses illustrative scenarios to show how such tools may soon become integral to everyday care. It emphasises that their adoption brings as many challenges as opportunities, particularly around equity of access, ethical oversight, and the adaptation of professional roles. The discussion highlights the importance of preparing the workforce to navigate these changes, developing both technical fluency and critical judgement to ensure that innovation is aligned with patient safety and public trust. Ultimately, the chapter presents tomorrow’s technologies not as science fiction but as an imminent reality, underscoring the responsibility of health and care staff to engage with innovation while preserving the human connection that lies at the core of compassionate practice.
