Abstract
Why consider artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering and ethics together? 1.1 Instead of an IntroductionInstead of yet another classical boring introduction about artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of biomedical engineering (BME) and the related ethical considerations thereof, let us start instead with a virtual discussion between Achilles and the Turtle (see Fig. 1.1), in the style of the researcher Douglas R. Hofstadter's famous book about Gdel, Escher, Bach [1]:Achilles: Ah, my dear turtle!Have you heard about the latest advancements in artificial intelligence? It's truly remarkable how far technology has come.AI has the potential to revolutionize our lives in ways we never imagined.Turtle: Indeed, Achilles.I have heard of these developments, and while they are impressive, I cannot help but ponder the ethical implications.Should we not be cautious about the rapid progress of AI? Achilles: Caution is always wise, my friend. However, consider the numerous benefits AI brings: it can enhance healthcare, streamline industries, and even assist in solving complex global challenges. The potential for good is immense.Turtle: True, but we must also consider the potential risks.AI could exacerbate existing inequalities, invade our privacy, and even challenge our very humanity.Should we not prioritize ethical considerations to ensure AI serves the greater good?Achilles: Absolutely, ethics should not be overlooked. But we must not let fear stifle innovation.By working together and establishing proper guidelines, we can harness the power of AI while mitigating its risks. We must embrace progress with a balanced approach.Turtle: I agree, Achilles.Balance is key.Let us strive to create a future where AI enhances human life without compromising our ethical values.Together, we can navigate this brave new world with wisdom and care. This virtual dialogue, generated by a generative AI [2] tries to provide the framework and setting of this book, a collection of individual chapters addressing and illuminating various key aspects in the intersection of the of the three topics artificial intelligence (AI) (Sections 1.1), biomedical engineering (BME) (Section 1.2) and ethics (Section 1.3).
