Abstract
The influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is rapidly disrupting traditional teaching methods. AI-driven tools, namely ChatGPT, look like in primary, secondary, and higher education. The recent studies and meta-analyses that highlight how ChatGPT has been shown to support improved learning outcomes, different instructional approaches to increase engagement and motivation, and enhanced higher-order thinking skills through skill-based content areas and sciences, technologies, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We examine additional issues such as the type of course delivery, learning model, and length of intervention, which may also mediate the effectiveness of the AI. While the potential to improve engagement, one-on-one support, and accessibility is tremendous, and also identify challenges, inconsistencies, and potential negative biases related to academic integrity, reliance on AI, and access issues related to equity. Finally, this chapter provides recommendations for educators and policy makers to use AI responsibly through practice support, reflective continuous assessment and feedback, and ethical principles. This chapter concludes that with continued intentional integration into education, ChatGPT may be used as a valuable tutor, partner, or cognitive tool to support differentiated learning needs and maintain educational integrity.
