Abstract
Objectives: To trace the historical evolution of bioethics from its philosophical foundations to its contemporary role in modern healthcare and policy-making. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using databases including PubMed, JSTOR, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Keywords such as “history of bioethics,” “clinical ethics,” “AI in healthcare,” and “informed consent” were used to identify relevant scholarly literature, historical documents, and legal frameworks. Selected sources were analyzed thematically. Results: Bioethics has evolved in response to scientific advancements, societal transformations, and historical ethical violations, including wartime human experimentation that led to landmark frameworks such as the Nuremberg Code. Contemporary bioethics now addresses complex challenges related to artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, digital health, patient autonomy, and global health inequities. Ethical oversight mechanisms have expanded to ensure responsible innovation and protection of human rights. Conclusions: Bioethics remains a dynamic and essential discipline that guides ethical decision-making, informs healthcare policy, and strengthens public trust in medical systems. Its continued evolution is crucial for addressing emerging technological and societal challenges in healthcare.
