Abstract

In November 2022, the release of Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) was announced by the American Artificial Intelligence (AI) research organisation (OpenAI).This attracted significant attention both in the public media and the scientific arena.Internally related to this release is the new technology known as generative artificial intelligence (GAI).GAI has been widely lauded for its potential in the drafting and structuring of manuscripts, as well as scrutinising conceptual and scientific merit.Additional assets include improving readability and grammar. As is often, there is likely to be some drawback of GAI and other similar emerging parallel tools. To date, the most reputable bioethics bodies and those who established the standard for best practice in research and publication are still grappling with how to address and establish best practices for the use of GAI in research and publication. 1The present discourse aims to synthesise emerging views on GAI in research and publication. To address this issue in a wider context, the present article will focus on the relevant issue for manuscript writing, specifically in the context of the 'Global South' (i.e., low-and middleincome countries, mainly in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Oceania). These countries, due to many factors, have historically been marginalised in global political and economic systems. 2 Despite accounting for a significant portion of the world's population, this region continues to struggle in research and development, with only a few exceptions.
