The Impact and Challenges of AI on Students’ Writing Skills--Take ChatGPT for example

Abstract

In the information-heavy digital era, artificial intelligence technology is developing rapidly. AI tools are applied to play a role in various fields, and are increasingly used in the academic field, with far-reaching impacts on the output of academic results and students’ writing ability. This study adopts the research method of questionnaire survey to deeply analyze the multifaceted role of AI tools represented by ChatGPT on students’ writing ability and explore the opportunities and challenges it brings. The study found that, on the one hand, AI tools can significantly improve students’ academic writing efficiency. On the other hand, students’ frequent use of AI tools may cause their blind dependence on them, which triggers a series of problems such as academic self-discipline, weakening of students’ thinking, and digital ethics. Based on this, this paper reveals that educators should develop reasonable teaching strategies to regulate students’ use of AI. Students themselves should also improve their academic self-discipline and develop their digital literacy and innovative thinking. This paper will provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance on how to correctly regulate the use of AI tools by students, to promote the benign development of students’ writing ability in the era of AI.
