Abstract
The adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), defined as “machines performing cognitive functions usually associated with human minds” (Raisch, & Krakowski, 2021, p. 192), has become a prominent phenomenon (Budhwar et al., 2023; Dwivedi et al., 2023). The use of AI tools significantly impacts societies and individuals (Brown at al., 2024; Pereira et al., 2023), while the impact of AI on underrepresented groups, including women, migrants, refugees, older workers, employees with disabilities, indigenous employees, and more, are not yet well- examined. Given the importance of understanding the impact of AI on underrepresented groups in the workplace, along with the purpose of enhancing workplace diversity, equity, and inclusivity, we invited scholars from AI and technology, diversity and inclusion, and human resource management to share insights on the impact of AI on different underrepresented groups. The main purpose of our symposium is to attract scholars to pay more attention to the impact of AI on people who are underrepresented and identify ways to help them adapt to the new trend of using AI in the workplace. Specifically, it is important to unweave the impact of AI on individuals and explore specific underrepresented groups to better understand the positive and negative impact of AI and propose strategies to support those groups in using AI tools effectively. This collection of studies investigates various underrepresented groups and contexts in which AI plays its unique, significant roles in relation to work outcomes. By attempting to explore the impact of AI on various underrepresented groups, this symposium contributes to enhancing our understanding and perspective of underrepresented groups in the Age of AI, providing theoretical and practical applications to employees, managers, and organizations.
